The following is a letter received by the manager of a construction site:

"Dear Sir,

I was building a house on your site, and we had more bricks than we needed to finish the upper floor.  We had a pulley fixed to a beam at the top, with a barrel on a rope, so we could hoist things up and down.  The rope was tied down at the ground with the barrel at top floor level. We decided to use the barrel to lower the extra bricks, and I stood on the ground while my buddy loaded them into the barrel.

While I waited, I grasped the rope firmly with my right hand.  When my buddy shouted that the barrel was full, I cast off the line with my left.

Unfortunately, the barrel was heavier than I was, and started to fall, pulling me sharply off the ground.  As it came down, I went up.   Halfway to the top, I met the barrel coming down, and got a severe blow to my shoulder.  The barrel carried on down, and as it hit the ground I reached the top, jamming my fingers painfully into the pulley and banging my head on the beam.

When the barrel hit the ground, it burst, and the bricks fell out.  I was now heavier than the barrel, and started back towards the ground.   Halfway down, I met the barrel coming up, and received a heavy shock to my shins.

When I reached the ground, I landed on the bricks.  At this point, I must have lost my presence of mind, because I let go the line.  The remains of the barrel now fell again, landing on top of me and putting me in hospital, where I still am.

I respectfully request sick leave.

Yours faithfully

etc., etc.
